Dissertation, a structured piece of writing is considered as the first step to a successful PhD.  A dissertation develops logical development argument regarding the research, demonstrates if a scholar is capable of identifying his/ her area of interest, manage the research project, and determines if the scholar is proficient in using the appropriate research tools.

To pen down a perfect final dissertation, one has to heedfully plan and prepare an outline of a dissertation. An outline includes a title page, abstract, an introduction chapter, literature review chapter, methodology, findings, conclusion chapter and a bibliography chapter.

Title page – A title page normally includes a title of the dissertation, University name and scholar’s name.

Abstract – An abstract briefly describes the research problem, summarises the major argument, and lists the critical findings and conclusions.

Introduction chapter – This chapter explains the basic outline of your dissertation, your objective and the reason behind choosing the particular topic. Introduction chapter should be concluded smoothly, leading to the main body of your dissertation.

Literature review chapter – This is the most important part of your dissertation. It identifies the key element in your field of study that has already been completed, helps you identify the research gap between the two studies, and analyses the latest information that is relevant to your study. In the case of theoretical dissertations, substantive chapters will engage with  literature and hence a separate literature review chapter is not necessary.

Methodology – This chapter explains the research approach (qualitative/ quantitative) you have used, the reason behind choosing the specific approach, and how it was deployed.

Findings – Findings chapter comprises the majority of your dissertation. It describes your findings and consists of consolidated data sets. Ensure that the results presented in this section are directly linked to the methodology segment.

Conclusion chapter – Loose ends are tied up in this chapter. I.e. The typical ingredients included in this chapter are the summary of the main text, limitations of your work, your opinion on what has been discussed in your dissertation, future scope of research in your field of study, facts that are not mentioned in the main body of your dissertation.

Bibliography – Here the sources should be cited alphabetically, and must be easy to look up. Thoroughly check your dissertation before the submission, to ensure that no cited sources are missing in the bibliography chapters.

While preparing an outline, ensure that you have followed the specific formatting style that your University has demanded.
